"markdown": "# Form ADV for data users\n\n> Form ADV is the form investment advisers file with the SEC, and the SEC's monthly adviser file turns its Part 1 answers into one row per firm with 448 columns. This guide walks the items a data user touches, names the columns each one becomes, and lists the formatting traps.\n\nUpdated: 2026-10-17\n\n## What Form ADV is\r\n\r\nForm ADV is the \"Uniform Application for Investment Adviser Registration and Report by Exempt Reporting Advisers.\" A firm files it to register as an investment adviser and must keep it current with periodic amendments. The form warns that false statements or omissions \"may result in denial of your application, revocation of your registration, or criminal prosecution.\"\r\n\r\nThis guide covers Part 1A, the structured part: checkboxes, Yes/No answers, numbers, dates and short text, which is why it becomes data. Some items send the filer to Schedule D for extra detail, and umbrella registrations add a Schedule R per relying adviser. We use only the Part 1A text and the SEC's monthly file, so we say nothing about Part 2.\r\n\r\nTo look up one column, use the [column dictionary](/data/form-adv/columns). For the wider picture, start at the [data hub](/data).\r\n\r\n## What the monthly file is\r\n\r\nThe SEC publishes \"Investment Adviser Information Reports\" as zip files holding a spreadsheet. The SEC says the column headings \"refer to specific questions within Form ADV (e.g. 5B(2) refers to Form ADV, Item 5B(2)).\" Registered advisers and Exempt Reporting Advisers are published as separate files.\r\n\r\nThe file we describe:\r\n\r\n| Property | Value |\r\n|---|---|\r\n| File | `ia100226.zip`, containing `ia09012026.csv` |\r\n| Rows | 17,210 (one per firm) |\r\n| Columns | 448 |\r\n| Encoding | cp1252 |\r\n| Firm Type | `Registered` on every row |\r\n| Date labels | Inner file `ia09012026.csv` (09/01/2026); zip `ia100226.zip` (reads as 10/02/26); the SEC page lists it as \"Registered Investment Advisers, October 2026\" |\r\n\r\nThree points from the SEC's data page apply to everything below:\r\n\r\n- The data is a subset of what firms file with the Investment Adviser Registration Depository (IARD).\r\n- \"Neither the SEC nor the state securities authorities have approved the information filed on Form ADV, and we can not guarantee its accuracy.\"\r\n- Some country fields are missing from the report. The SEC says IAPD (www.adviserinfo.sec.gov) has the most recent filing, including country.\r\n\r\nExempt Reporting Advisers file only Items 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 10 and 11. The registered-advisers file also carries Items 4, 5, 8, 9 and 12. The SEC page does not say which date the data reflects, so we do not assert one.\r\n\r\nNot every column is a form answer. 35 of the 448 have no form item: six added by the SEC (SEC Region, Firm Type, SEC Current Status, SEC Status Effective Date, Latest ADV Filing Date, Form Version), 28 Item 5.D columns and the plain `8H`, none of which match a question in the form text. Many others are counts or summaries the SEC derived from Schedule D lists. The dictionary says which is which.\r\n\r\n## Item 1: identifying information\r\n\r\nItem 1 asks who the firm is and how to reach it.\r\n\r\n| Question | Columns |\r\n|---|---|\r\n| 1.A legal name | [Legal Name](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Legal%20Name) |\r\n| 1.B(1) business name | [Primary Business Name](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Primary%20Business%20Name) |\r\n| 1.B(2) umbrella registration | [Umbrella Registration](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Umbrella%20Registration), [Total number of relying advisers](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Total%20number%20of%20relying%20advisers) |\r\n| 1.D, 1.E identifiers | [SEC#](/data/form-adv/columns?q=SEC%23), [CIK#](/data/form-adv/columns?q=CIK%23), [Organization CRD#](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Organization%20CRD%23) |\r\n| 1.F, 1.G addresses | Main Office and Mail Office columns, including the [private residence flags](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Private%20Residence%20Flag) |\r\n| 1.I, 1.L | [1I](/data/form-adv/columns?q=1I), [Website Address](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Website%20Address), [1L](/data/form-adv/columns?q=1L) and the books-and-records location columns |\r\n| 1.M to 1.P | [1M](/data/form-adv/columns?q=1M), [1N](/data/form-adv/columns?q=1N), [1O](/data/form-adv/columns?q=1O), [1P](/data/form-adv/columns?q=1P) |\r\n\r\nTraps:\r\n\r\n- **Names are not keys.** Primary Business Name and Legal Name are filled on every row, and 17,146 distinct primary names cover 17,210 rows. For the 67 sole proprietorships, Legal Name is a person's name in last, first, middle order.\r\n- **Private residences.** When the private-residence flag is Y, the street address, city, state, country and postal code are all blank, so geography is missing for those firms. That is 1,406 rows for the main office (the telephone number is still filled). The mailing flag is filled in 1,616 rows but only 1,443 have a mailing address: the 173 extra are all Y with every address field blank.\r\n- **Foreign addresses have no state.** Keep postal codes as text.\r\n- **Phone and fax are free text.** The fax box holds N/A, NONE and NA.\r\n- **One value of many.** A firm with several CIK numbers, CRD numbers or websites shows only one; an SEC-added count column gives the total.\r\n- **1O is the firm's own total assets** from its balance sheet, \"rather than the assets you manage on behalf of clients.\" The band labels differ from the form (\"$1 billion - $10 billion\" against \"$1 billion to less than $10 billion\"); treat ranges as half-open.\r\n- **1P is the Legal Entity Identifier.** Filers also type N/A or NONE. Check the format before use.\r\n\r\n## Item 2: SEC registration\r\n\r\nItem 2.A asks which basis the firm relies on. The form says to \"check at least one of the Items 2.A.(1) through 2.A.(12),\" and each box becomes a Y/N column.\r\n\r\n| Column | Basis, in short |\r\n|---|---|\r\n| [2A(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=2A(1)) | Large firm: regulatory assets under management of $100 million or more (or $90 million if already registered) |\r\n| [2A(2)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=2A(2)) | Mid-sized firm: $25 million or more but under $100 million, with state conditions |\r\n| [2A(4)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=2A(4)) to [2A(7)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=2A(7)) | Office outside the US; adviser to a registered investment company; adviser to a business development company; pension consultant |\r\n| [2A(8)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=2A(8)) to [2A(12)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=2A(12)) | Related adviser, 120-day expected eligibility, multi-state, Internet adviser, SEC order |\r\n| [2A(13)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=2A(13)) | No longer eligible to remain registered with the SEC |\r\n\r\nThere is no 2A(3) column because that item is \"Reserved.\" The boxes are not exclusive. 71 rows are Y on 2A(13). Item 2.C becomes [Jurisdiction Notice Filed-Effective Date](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Jurisdiction%20Notice), one cell holding many entries written STATE-MM/DD/YYYY (for example NY-03/30/2012); split it before use.\r\n\r\n## Items 3 and 4: organization and succession\r\n\r\nItem 3 becomes [3A](/data/form-adv/columns?q=3A) (how the firm is organized, with free text in [3A-Other](/data/form-adv/columns?q=3A-Other)), [3B](/data/form-adv/columns?q=3B) (the month the fiscal year ends, always in capitals, such as `DECEMBER`) and [3C-State](/data/form-adv/columns?q=3C-State) and [3C-Country](/data/form-adv/columns?q=3C-Country) (where the firm is organized). For a sole proprietor, 3C is where they live.\r\n\r\n[4A](/data/form-adv/columns?q=4A) asks whether the firm is succeeding to a registered adviser's business. Only 23 rows are Y. Only those rows have an Acquired Firm name, SEC# or CRD# and a [4B](/data/form-adv/columns?q=4B) date. Total Number of Acquired Firms is filled on every row (0 or 1).\r\n\r\n## Item 5: the advisory business\r\n\r\nItem 5 holds most of the columns data users want.\r\n\r\n**5.A and 5.B, employees.** [5A](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5A) is approximate employees (excluding clerical). [5B(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5B(1)) to [5B(5)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5B(5)) count them by function: advisory work, broker-dealer registered representatives, adviser representatives, insurance agents. An employee doing several things is counted in each answer, so do not add them up to 5A. [5B(6)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5B(6)) counts firms or persons that solicit clients, not employees.\r\n\r\n**5.C and 5.D, clients.** [5C(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5C(1)) counts clients with no regulatory assets under management; two rows hold the text \" 11-25\" instead of a number. [5C(2)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5C(2)) is the percentage of non-US-person clients.\r\n\r\nItem 5.D has one row per client type, from (a) individuals through (n) other, each with three columns:\r\n\r\n| Suffix | Meaning |\r\n|---|---|\r\n| (1) | Number of clients |\r\n| (2) | \"Fewer than 5 clients\" when ticked, blank otherwise |\r\n| (3) | Regulatory assets under management, US dollars |\r\n\r\nSee [5D(a)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5D(a)) for the pattern. Boxes (d), (e) and (f) (investment companies, business development companies, pooled investment vehicles) have no \"fewer than 5\" option. When the box is ticked, the count may be blank or hold the actual 0 to 4. The form says the 5.D(3) amounts \"should equal\" the 5.F(2)(c) total; that is not guaranteed. The columns `5D(1)(a)` to `5D(2)(m)-Other` match no question in the form text; only one of 17,210 rows has a value, so ignore them.\r\n\r\n**5.E, compensation.** The form asks \"You are compensated for your investment advisory services by (check all that apply).\" Each option is its own raw Y/N column:\r\n\r\n| Column | Option |\r\n|---|---|\r\n| [5E(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5E(1)) | A percentage of assets under your management |\r\n| [5E(2)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5E(2)) | Hourly charges |\r\n| [5E(3)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5E(3)) | Subscription fees (for a newsletter or periodical) |\r\n| [5E(4)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5E(4)) | Fixed fees (other than subscription fees) |\r\n| [5E(5)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5E(5)) | Commissions |\r\n| [5E(6)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5E(6)) | Performance-based fees |\r\n| [5E(7)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5E(7)) | Other (specify), text in [5E(7)-Other](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5E(7)-Other) |\r\n\r\nThe boxes can be Y together, and neither the form nor the file combines them into a category. We add no grouping; if you build one, document the rule.\r\n\r\n**5.F, regulatory assets under management.** [5F(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5F(1)) asks whether the firm provides \"continuous and regular supervisory or management services to securities portfolios.\" Then:\r\n\r\n| Column | Meaning |\r\n|---|---|\r\n| [5F(2)(a)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5F(2)(a)) | Discretionary assets, US dollars |\r\n| [5F(2)(b)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5F(2)(b)) | Non-discretionary assets, US dollars |\r\n| [5F(2)(c)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5F(2)(c)) | Total regulatory assets under management: the headline figure |\r\n| [5F(2)(d)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5F(2)(d)) to [(f)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5F(2)(f)) | Discretionary, non-discretionary and total accounts |\r\n| [5F(3)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5F(3)) | Portion attributable to non-US persons |\r\n\r\n5F(2)(a) to (f) are filled on every row. The 358 firms that answered No to 5F(1) have `.00` in the money columns and `0` in the account counts. 5F(3) is blank in 360 rows, including those 358. The form tells filers to follow Part 1A Instruction 5.b to calculate the figure; that instruction is not in the text we use.\r\n\r\n**5.G and 5.H, activities.** [5G(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5G(1)) to [5G(12)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5G(12)) are the \"type(s) of advisory services\" boxes (financial planning, portfolio management for different client kinds, pension consulting, publications, seminars, other). [5H](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5H) is a band, not a number (0, 1-10, 11-25, 26-50, 51-100, 101-250, 251-500, More than 500), stored with a space at the front. A cell holding a single space means not asked (7,219 rows): 7,216 of them have 5G(1) N, because 5H is asked of firms that provide financial planning, and 3 have 5G(1) Y with no answer. 2,014 firms with 5G(1) N still hold a band.\r\n\r\n**5.I to 5.L.** [5I(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5I(1)) asks about wrap fee programs, and [5I(2)(a)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5I(2)(a)) to (c) split dollars by role (sponsor, portfolio manager, both); an amount in (c) must not also be in (a) or (b). 5.J has two questions that refer to Part 2A. [5K(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5K(1)) to [5K(4)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5K(4)) lead to Schedule D blocks. 5.K.(1) asset mix is filled for every firm with a Y on 5K(1) (12,536 rows), in set (a) at $10 billion or more and set (b) below. 5.K.(2) borrowing and derivatives is for firms with separately managed account assets of at least $500 million: only 1,329 rows have any 5.K.(2) column, and 2,126 of the 3,256 firms with a Y on 5K(2) or 5K(3) have none. The file has no 5.K.(3) custodian columns. Percentages in 5.K.(2) are free entry: 208 filled cells exceed 100, up to 999999.99, so check outliers before averaging. [5L](/data/form-adv/columns?q=5L) covers marketing (performance, testimonials, endorsements, third-party ratings); 5L(2) follows a Y on 5L(1)(c), (d) or (e), but 3,724 of its 8,966 filled rows have no such Y, so filter on the parent first.\r\n\r\n## Items 6 and 7: other business, affiliations, private funds\r\n\r\n[6A(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=6A(1)) to [6A(14)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=6A(14)) are \"check all that apply\" boxes for other roles (broker-dealer, insurance agent, bank, accountant, lawyer and others). [6B(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=6B(1)) to [6B(3)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=6B(3)) ask about any other business; 6B(2) is asked only after a Y on 6B(1).\r\n\r\nItem 7.A concerns \"related persons\": the firm's advisory affiliates and anyone under common control with it. [7A(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=7A(1)) to [7A(16)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=7A(16)) record which kinds the firm has.\r\n\r\nThe file adds columns that are not form answers: Count of IA Affiliates, Count of IA/BD Affiliates, Count of BD Affiliates, Control/Controlled by Related Person, Under Common Control, Share Supervised Persons and Share Location. The SEC gives no definition for them. Our dictionary reads them from their names as summaries of Schedule D 7.A answers and marks that reading unconfirmed. One visible gap: Count of IA Affiliates is 0 for 513 firms that ticked 7A(2); the file does not say why. The form's exemption begins \"You do not need to complete Section 7.A. of Schedule D for any related person if\", one possible reason.\r\n\r\n[7B](/data/form-adv/columns?q=7B) asks whether the firm advises a private fund. The detail is derived from Schedule D 7.B: [Count of Private Funds - 7B(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Count%20of%20Private%20Funds%20-%207B(1)), Any/Total pairs by fund type, and Total Gross Assets of Private Funds. Traps:\r\n\r\n- 242 firms are Y on 7B with a private-fund count of 0. The form allows this when another SEC adviser reports the fund in full; such funds appear in [Count of Private Funds - 7B(2)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Count%20of%20Private%20Funds%20-%207B(2)).\r\n- Total Gross Assets of Private Funds is gross asset value, not regulatory assets under management. Do not add it to 5F(2)(c).\r\n- Count columns can be padded text with thousands separators (\"1,286\").\r\n\r\n## Item 8: client transactions\r\n\r\nItem 8 covers the firm's and its related persons' interest in client transactions. All columns are Y/N: [8A](/data/form-adv/columns?q=8A) (proprietary interest), [8B](/data/form-adv/columns?q=8B) (sales interest), [8C](/data/form-adv/columns?q=8C) (discretion), and 8D to 8I (broker recommendations, soft dollar benefits, referral compensation). The form asks follow-ups \"if you answer yes\" to a parent, but the file does not enforce it. 8D is filled in 11,519 rows, yet only 9,789 have 8C(3) Y (1,730 have N). 8F is filled in 12,527 rows, 997 with 8E N. 8G(2) is filled in 7,518 rows, 1,675 with 8G(1) N. Filter on the parent first. Use 8H(1) and 8H(2), not the legacy plain `8H`.\r\n\r\n## Item 9: custody\r\n\r\n| Column | Meaning |\r\n|---|---|\r\n| [9A(1)(a)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=9A(1)(a)), [9A(1)(b)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=9A(1)(b)) | Firm has custody of cash or securities |\r\n| [9A(2)(a)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=9A(2)(a)), (b) | Dollar amount and number of clients |\r\n| [9B(1)(a)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=9B(1)(a)) to 9B(2)(b) | Same, for related persons |\r\n| [Total Custody Amount](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Total%20Custody%20Amount) | Added by the SEC |\r\n| [9C(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=9C(1)) to [9C(4)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=9C(4)) | Safeguards (statements, audits, surprise examination, internal control report) |\r\n| [9D(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=9D(1)), [9D(2)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=9D(2)) | Firm or related person acts as qualified custodian |\r\n| [9E](/data/form-adv/columns?q=9E), [9F](/data/form-adv/columns?q=9F) | Surprise-examination month (MM/YYYY); number of qualified custodians |\r\n\r\nTraps: SEC-registered firms answer No to 9.A(1) if their only custody is deducting advisory fees, so No is not \"holds nothing.\" Total Custody Amount equals 9A(2)(a) plus 9B(2)(a) in all 10,581 filled rows. The column 9C Unqual Opinion has Y/N on every row even for firms with no custody; read it with 9C(2) to 9C(4).\r\n\r\n## Items 10 and 12\r\n\r\n[10A](/data/form-adv/columns?q=10A) asks whether an unnamed person controls the firm's management or policies. Owner and officer detail (Schedules A, B, C) is not in the file.\r\n\r\nItem 12 applies, per the form, only to SEC-registered firms reporting under $25 million in 5.F(2)(c), so about 16,300 rows are blank on [12A](/data/form-adv/columns?q=12A) to [12C(2)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=12C(2)). The SEC page does not list Item 12 among the sections in the report, yet the columns are present.\r\n\r\n## Item 11: disclosures\r\n\r\nThe columns are [11](/data/form-adv/columns?q=11) and Y/N columns from [11A(1)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=11A(1)) to [11H(2)](/data/form-adv/columns?q=11H(2)), covering criminal actions (A, B), SEC and CFTC actions (C), other regulators (D), self-regulatory organizations (E), revoked authorizations to act as attorney, accountant or federal contractor (F), pending proceedings (G) and court actions (H). Each has a paired `Count of ... disclosures` column.\r\n\r\n- **Firm-level only.** The questions cover the firm and its advisory affiliates: current employees (other than clerical or support staff), officers, partners, directors, and persons controlling or controlled by the firm. They are not records of individual advisers by name.\r\n- **A ten-year window.** SEC-registered firms \"may limit your disclosure of any event listed in Item 11 to ten years following the date of the event,\" and may report only pending charges for 11.A(2) and 11.B(2).\r\n- **Counts are SEC-derived and undefined.** The SEC gives no definition, and count and Y/N disagree for 70 item pairs across about 38 rows, each a Y with a count of 0. Use the Y/N as the filer's statement.\r\n- **A Y is the firm's own report.** The file holds no detail on the event, date or outcome; 11.G and 11.H(2) cover pending matters. The form says \"you\" and \"your\" include the filing adviser and all relying advisers under an umbrella registration (1,048 rows are umbrella registrations).\r\n\r\n## Joining and cleaning\r\n\r\n- **The key.** Join on [Organization CRD#](/data/form-adv/columns?q=Organization%20CRD%23). It is filled on every row and unique in this file. SEC# (801- plus digits) is also unique. Never join on names. CRD, CIK and similar identifiers are identifiers: never sum them. CIK# is blank in 12,889 rows.\r\n- **Money.** Dollar columns are text like `1,234,567.00`, padded on the left with spaces and with thousands separators. Trim, remove commas, parse. A money zero is written `.00`. The exception is 5.G.(3) - Total amount of Parallel Assets, with no cents, no padding and no decimal point. The 5.K.(2) derivative ratios are text numbers such as 0.02 or 54.37.\r\n- **Integers.** Counts can also be padded and hold thousands separators. Trim first.\r\n- **Y/N.** 163 columns are Y or N. Blank is a separate state (not asked, or not answered), so keep three values and do not turn blank into N.\r\n- **Dates.** Most are MM/DD/YYYY; 9E is MM/YYYY.\r\n- **Bands.** 5H and the 1O amount are text labels, not numbers.\r\n- **Reading recipe.** Read every column as text with cp1252 encoding, and turn off any reader setting that converts \"N/A\" or \"NA\" to nulls. Non-ASCII characters exist (for example non-breaking spaces in addresses).\r\n- **Header traps.** 38 headers have trailing or double spaces (`5.K.(2)(a)(i)(3)(a) less 10 percentage ` ends in a space; `5.K.(1)(a)(xii) - Other description` has two), the SEC typo `less10` appears, and header styles mix (`over150` against `over 150`). Match headers exactly, or strip them on both sides.\r\n- **SEC-added columns.** The dictionary records their values (two statuses; five form versions, with 17,205 of 17,210 rows on 10/2021), but the SEC documents no further meaning. The same applies to the derived counts above. Do not build on a meaning the SEC has not published.\r\n\r\nThe [JSON dictionary](/api/v1/form-adv/columns.json) holds each column's verbatim question and gotchas.\r\n\r\n## What this data can't tell you\r\n\r\n- **It is what firms filed.** The SEC has not approved the filings and cannot guarantee accuracy.\r\n- **It is a subset.** Schedules A, B, C and R and most Schedule D detail are not in the file. The SEC points to IAPD for a full filing.\r\n- **It covers one group.** This file is registered advisers only. Exempt Reporting Advisers are separate, and for state-registered advisers the SEC points to state regulators through NASAA.\r\n- **Blank is not zero and not No.** Many questions are asked only after a Yes to another.\r\n\r\n## Sources and where to go next\r\n\r\n- [Form ADV Part 1A (SEC)](https://www.sec.gov/files/formadv-part1a_1.pdf), SEC 1707 (07-24).\r\n- [SEC Investment Adviser Information Reports](https://www.sec.gov/data-research/sec-markets-data/information-about-registered-investment-advisers-exempt-reporting-advisers), the monthly files and the SEC's notes.\r\n- [Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD)](https://www.adviserinfo.sec.gov), where the SEC says to view a firm's most recent Form ADV.\r\n- [Column dictionary](/data/form-adv/columns): all 448 columns with form item, question, type, values and gotchas.\r\n- [Data hub](/data), [about this site](/about) and [the agents page](/agents) for machine-readable routes.\n\n---\nSource: https://wealthtech.dev/data/form-adv · CC BY 4.0\n"
